Site Search Provides a Major Boost for E-Commerce Sites During 2005 Holiday Shopping Season, According to WebSideStory

Site Search Provides a Major Boost for E-Commerce Sites During 2005 Holiday Shopping Season, According to WebSideStory

Visitors Using the Search Box on a Web Site Nearly 3x More Likely to Convert
Than the Average Visitor, According to WebSideStory Index

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 12 -- Site search provided a huge
boost to e-commerce sites during the holiday shopping season, helping convert
visitors into buyers at nearly three times the rate of average site users,
according to a new study by WebSideStory, Inc. (Nasdaq: WSSI), a leading
provider of on-demand digital marketing applications. During the last three
months of the year, the conversion rate for visitors using the search box on a
web site was 7.54 percent -- 2.7 times higher than the conversion rate for
average site users (2.79 percent), according to the WebSideStory Index, a new
statistical barometer that features techno-graphic and e-commerce trends
culled from the millions of users that visit web sites using the company's
award-winning web analytics technology. Site search conversion rates also
soared as the holiday shopping season progressed, jumping from just under
6 percent in October to more than 8 percent for the month of December,
according to the index.
"This data shows that effective site search is becoming one of the most
critical conversion drivers in online commerce," said Ali Behnam, senior
digital marketing consultant for WebSideStory. "Helping visitors find what
they are looking for in a fast, convenient manner significantly increases the
likelihood of their making a purchase. We only expect these conversion rates
to increase as more and more e-commerce sites engage in best of breed site
search implementations."

The WebSideStory Index is a compilation of techno-graphic and e-commerce
trends. It spans everything from browser and operating system trends to
shopping cart usage and checkout conversion rates. Other findings of the
latest index, which covered the last three months of the year and early 2006:

* Branding and customer loyalty also continue to drive conversion rates,
especially during the holiday season. Repeat visitor conversion rates
(13.88 percent) were seven times higher than new visitor conversion
rates (1.68 percent) during the last quarter of the year

* Despite making strong gains in 2005, the Firefox browser did not meet
its reported goal of 10 percent market share by year's end. As of
Jan. 5, 2006, Firefox had a U.S. browser usage share of 8.88 percent,
according to the index. Although Mozilla Corp. did not reach its
intended goal -- a target first reported by ZDNet -- the browser still
made significant strides over the last year, rising from a 4.23 percent
share on Jan. 5, 2005. Three-quarters of that growth came during the
first half of the year. The last time a non-Microsoft browser achieved
close to a 9 percent market share was Netscape in April 2002, according
to the index.

"The good news for Firefox in 2005 is that it established itself as a
viable Microsoft alternative with millions of users," said Geoff Johnston, a
WebSideStory analyst.

SID SALTER: Mississippi's E-Commerce losses mounting
1/11/2006 6:53:02 AM
Daily Journal

The fight now underway in the Legislature to give Mississippi families a break by a systematic elimination of the current 7 percent sales tax on food by raising Mississippi's ridiculously low 18 cents per pack tax on cigarettes is indeed worthwhile.

E-Commerce growing

But if state government really wants to take a serious look at tax equity questions, one lumbering elephant in the room is the amount of sales tax Mississippi is failing to collect on so-called "E-Commerce" or Internet sales.

The greatest E-Commerce losses occur in states relying most heavily on the sales tax as a revenue source. Mississippi has long been a state hooked on sales taxes as the backbone of the state's tax structure.

E-Commerce News: Enterprise IT: Google Beefs Up Mini for Enterprises, E-Commerce

E-Commerce News: Enterprise IT: Google Beefs Up Mini for Enterprises, E-Commerce

Google Beefs Up Mini for Enterprises, E-Commerce

Google has acknowledged the challenge of breaking into the enterprise segment from its consumer background, but pointed out that it now has some 2,000 corporate customers. While the enterprise unit is still a fraction of Google's overall revenue, the business line is already profitable.

Another e-commerce site, Toolfetch.com, which sells construction equipment and supplies, saw a 15 to 20 percent increase in sales and a 30 percent increase in the number of searches conducted on the site, CEO Andrew Brown told the E-Commerce Times.

The Mini was a major upgrade over an earlier, in-house system, Brown said. For instance, if a customer typed in "lazer" or another misspelling, the search would return no results. The new search will check spelling, offer users the chance to correct the word, and provide an extensive list of products that use lasers.

"We were missing a lot of sales that way -- and that's just one example," Brown said.

Month-by-month consumer goods shopping guide

Month-by-month guide for the best times to purchase all sorts of consumer goods

January

Besides everything Christmas, this is the time to stock up on calendars, planners and date books while they're available and at rock bottom prices. TVs are priced lowest during the two weeks prior to the Super Bowl.

Look for bargain prices on workout gear and fitness equipment to appeal to your New Year's resolutions.

January is still a great time to land excellent deals on high-thread-count sheets as well as other "white sale" items like towels and blankets.

February

President's Day is the cue for furniture retailers to offer blow-out bargains, especially on upholstered furniture. Watch for jewelry sales in honor of Valentine's Day, and don't be afraid to negotiate even the sale price on jewelry.

March

Even though it still feels like winter, home improvement centers haul out air conditioners in March and put them on sale. Other bargains: Winter sporting equipment and, oddly, frozen foods. March is National Frozen Food month so plan to fill your freezer with great bargains from Birdseye and Pictsweet for starters.

April

Home improvement items like flooring, house paint and gardening supplies are good buys now in anticipation of spring home-cleanup projects. And eggs--both chocolate and fowl. Think: Easter.

May

Mattresses and box springs are highly promoted from late May to early fall. This is when retailers gain significant support from the mattress manufacturers in the form of advertising and special offers. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional signal for big-ticket items like major appliances to go on sale.

June

If you're not too picky, this is a great month to buy a wedding dress. What hasn't sold gets highly discounted in anticipation of a new season of bridal wear. Home tools and hardware, dairy foods (yep, it's National Dairy Month) and menswear are the hot items for June.

July

Electronics, including air conditioners (what's left by this time in the season) and ceiling fans; craft supplies, summer clothes, shoes, swim wear and barbecues are offered at bargain prices this month.

August

Outdoor furniture, now marked down, is taking its last breath as the season winds down. Fresh produce is cheap this month as are school supplies and pre-season fall fashions. And white sale items are now offered routinely in August. My grandmother would be happy.

September

Golf clubs are a bargain this month along with canned goods (retailers want you to stock up for the long winter ahead), scooters, bikes and ... houses. Home sellers who were unsuccessful in selling during the summer are anxious to move before Christmas. They are more likely this month to listen to your ridiculously low offer.

October

This is the big candy month of the year. Stock up for all your holidays. And it may be a good time to buy a new car--if you must. In October salespeople are getting nervous about meeting or beating year-end quotas.

November

Turkeys are priced dirt cheap from now through Christmas. So are cranberries. Stock the freezer because a turkey that remains frozen is good for at least a year. And while you're at it stock up on baking supplies at rock bottom prices. Blankets, comforters and winter wear will also be deeply discounted to boost retailers' holiday cash-flow.

December

It used to be you had to wait until after Christmas for the sales. But in today's market, everything you can imagine from toys to computers, shoes to perfume, crystal to party foods, cell phones and baby furniture are on sale in hopes of boosting holiday retail sales.
